Mosquito Dunks Review

Mosquito Background: I had a fish pond. Not very big, kind of small, but the water fall was even smaller. Since the pond was close to the house, and the deck, it seemed like the size of the flowing water was perfect volume for enjoying. The problem was that surface of the water was not always in motion. With the plants, the size of the fish pond, and the flow rate of the water fall, there were sections of the pond that seemed, 'stagnant'. I heard that only a bottle cap of water was needed for mosquitoes to breed. Well the amount of water sitting on top of the water lillie leaves were more than a bottle cap's worth.

Mosquito Observations: Mosquitoes were either hovering around my fish pond or attacking myself and family. Fish didn't seem to eat all the larvae (maybe gold fish weren't best suited for mosquito control). In areas of the pond with constant shade (tall plants were in the pond too), and slow moving water, there were small mosquito larvae swimming around. Needed to eliminate this source of adult mosquitoes.

Mosquito Product and Information: Mosquito Dunks, a product that floats on top of the water surface, and releases a bacteria, Bacillus thuringiensis israeliensis. How do Mosquito Dunks work? Bacillus thuringiensis israeliensis, is a bacteria that is harmless to humans and fish, but interfere with how mosquito larvas absorb nutrients. So no mosquito larvae reach adulthood due to malnutrition and starvation.

Product Summary: Love the product!

Results: I Saw results within weeks. Now it could have been immediately, but being that I couldn't see a drop in mosquito larvae population, remember the product doesn't kill the eggs so you still get larvae. So I tried to measure the effectiveness by comparing what I remembered about the overall mosquito population, and the change after using Mosquito Dunks.

The Mosquito Product Hate Part:

1. Packaging. The Mosquito Dunks come in a blister pack, with a very well glued on backing. So if you like to keep the donut shape of the Mosquito Dunk, you need to be careful and maybe use a sharp object to help remove the Mosquito Dunk. Now to Mosquito Dunk defense, the product does not seem to loose its effectiveness if you break the Dunk in two, but for me I like the peace of mind seeing the donut floating in the water.
2. Lack of reminders. Not really the fault of Mosquito Dunks makers that I can't remember when to add a new Dunk, just a set of stickers would be cool. Maybe this is should be in the tips section actually. ;)

The Mosquito Product Love Part:

1. The Product Works! As I said, it took a while, but it did seem to have made a change in the overall adult mosquito population, and I can say this product is great for Mosquito Control!
2. Price! Even though you need to replenish the protection every month, the cost of treatment of my pond was less than $20 per year.
3. Availably. Mosquito Dunks are so well known, you can get them in your local garden center, and even the large home stores like Home Depot®.

Our final recommendation and tips:

1. If you have a large body of water near your house, pond, unused pool, etc., get Mosquito Dunks. The cost of this Mosquito Control is extremely cheap compared to enjoying your outdoors time, and prevention of diseases like: West Nile, and Encephalitis
2. Mark on your calendar when to replace your Mosquito Dunk, as soon as you use a fresh one.
3. Stock up. Meaning, there doesn't seem to be any short-term problems to having an extra pack put away(remember to rotate your product), so when the warm weather comes, you can start controlling Mosquitoes ASAP!
